It works very well to modulate to distant keys in a smooth way or to put musical emphasis on certain chords.

Most people don't know how to use diminished chords, because they have a tense sound and they don't know what they should do with it.

The reality is that a diminished chord can resolve to SO many places and there's an easy trick to remember all the places where that chord can lead you.
